Character Breakdown:
All ages and races are welcome and encouraged. This production will be cast with an open mind to type/size/race/age/gender or any other "label" that might apply.

This show will be performed in-the-round.

Improv skills and a high level of energy are required.

Dancers of all skill levels are needed.

CAST

JESUS – (Tenor) Must be the most charismatic individual in the cast. High energy, charming, funny, gentle, but with strength. He is the sort of person others instinctively follow. Age 18-45.

JOHN THE BAPTIST/JUDAS – (Baritone) Has attributes of both Biblical figures: he is both Jesus’ lieutenant and most ardent disciple and the doubter who begins to question and rebel. Like Jesus, he is also charismatic, but in more of a revolutionary way. He is the most “serious” and intellectual of the group, though as with all the actors, he must still possess a good sense of physical comedy. Age 18-50.

The ensemble of disciples are made up of 8 to 12 energetic singers/dancers/actors of all ages and types. Although the script calls for the "shy one", the "class clown" or the "sexy one", we will cast according to your individual style and ability.

Please audition to showcase your strengths. If you cannot sing, but are a fabulous improvisational actor, or you are a jazz and tap prodigy, please contact us to make arrangements to try out. If you are just an actor, please prepare a comedic monologue; however, there are a limited number of non-singing roles available.

We also hope to find performers who are able to play a musical instrument (acoustic guitar/recorder (flute)/harmonica, etc.) as part of their character.

Prepare:Accompanist will be present and performers should have a prepared song of 32 bars in the style of folk, broadway or ballad. PLEASE BRING SHEET MUSIC ALONG. No a cappella singing. If you don't have sheet music we will have you sing a Christmas carol. Please dress appropriately for movement, including footwear.

Rehearsals Begin: Saturday January 17th or Monday January 19th depending on conflicts
Run Dates / Shoot Dates: March 20-April 5, 2009
Payment: None

Show Synopsis: Godspell one of the most successful musicals in history brings to life the parables of Jesus Christ in a whimsical view. His followers and disciples re-enact allegories and scenes from His life with great energy using various theatrical traditions including pantomime, charades, acrobatics and vaudeville tied together with a string of well-loved songs, led by the international hit "Day by Day". We will not be presenting this show as hippies or clowns!

Crew Needed: Lighting and sound operators are still needed. Also seeking orchestra members to play guitar and drums. There is a small stipend available. We are also hoping to expand and strengthen our Company Production teams and board with dedicated and creative theatrical but drama-free people.

Character Breakdown

Kyle:-Age: Mid 20s-: Born and raised in the city, his parents live outside the city and his mother was nurturing but his father held high expectations for his only child to be a successful doctor. He got his pilot's license at a young age and is currently awaiting test results to become a full time pilot in the Air Force. When he finds out he has epilepsy and cannot do what he's wanted to do all his life he decides to end it. He's since lost his mother to cancer and his father has become absorbed in his work and Kyle's family life has fallen apart. His dream was the last thing he was living for.

Amy: -Age: Mid 20s-: very artsy and slightly eccentric. She is living with Cancer and she appreciates life because she doesn't know how long she has to live it. She doesn't like to see people in a funk for long but doesn't really have social boundaries since she doesn't care what they think of her. Her clothes are artsy with her own sense of style yet portray her own sense of style. She likes to ride the bus on weekends and see new places since she only has a few months left to live. Her cancer has been in and out of remission but its back so she's decided to just make the best of it. She never meets a stranger and is the one person who seeks Kyle out on the bus as a new friend.

Beverly: -Age: 60s/70s:- spunky old gal who is on her way to get a check up. She suffers from occasional panic attacks due to losing her husband the year before. She is a confident and fun woman who is doing her best to continue living life to the fullest even though she suffers from health issues. She takes a slight interest in Kyle as he reminds her of her own grandson from out of state.

Jack:-Age: 40s- a watch salesman who has that salesmen mentality. He is out for himself but will show some concern for others when it's affecting him at the present. He has limited morals and can come across a

greasy and unethical. Some of his lines present a little comic relief on the bus ride because no one would really say some of the things he does out loud. He doesn't really want attention drawn to himself but manages to get it anyways because of his outwardly uneducated comments and questions.

Lydia:-Age: 30s- escaping a bad home life with her son Tanner. They are leaving his father as he has started to physically abuse her. She is leaving because she doesn't want to see Tanner get hurt physically or grow up in that lifestyle. She has an inner struggle but has an outward caring for others. She is on the bus because she is going to live with her mother until she can make it on her own. She plans to hide away from Tanner's father as she doesn't want him to find them.

Tanner:-Age: 5- has ADD and is along for the ride. He seems to be a little bit of a distraction on the bus as he has a hard time staying in his seat. He's open and talkative to most of the bus riders and starts driving his mother nuts by the end of the trip. He doesn't know why they are leaving but thinks it's to go visit his grandmother.

Elliot:-Age: different in the flashbacks-Elliot is Kyle's father and a family doctor. He loves his wife and Kyle but he doesn't show it very well. He wants Kyle to grow up and become a doctor and thinks his love for flying is just a childhood obsession. After he loses his wife Leslie he then becomes over protective of Kyle and also a little over demanding that Kyle give up his love for flying to have a real job following in his father's footsteps. Elliot carries a secret that only Leslie knows and she takes it to her grave. This secret is what creates the tension for the whole movie and ends up destroying Kyle's dreams.

Leslie:-Age: Different for flashbacks-Leslie is Kyle's mom and she is the one who prompts him to want to fly by telling him the courageous stories of his grandfather from WWII. She knows the reason her husband doesn't want Kyle to fly but she knows how much Kyle wants to be like his hero grandfather so she is like the middle ground between the two. She later dies when Kyle is in his late teens and this is what ultimately leads to the demise of the father/son relationship as she was the peacemaker between the two.

James:-Age: 40's-50s-James is the doctor who gives Kyle the bad news about his epilepsy. He is tormented in giving this news to some degree and the audience finds out why later in the movie. He doesn't wish to do what he is doing but he understands why it must be done. James also turns out to be the father of Amy the young woman who befriends Kyle on the bus. He loves his daughter and they have a decent relationship but he doesn't understand why she spends her last days riding the bus when it should be with her family.

John:-Age: 30s pawn shop owner that sells Kyle the unmarked gun. He has a kid and he does his best to care for that kid but he is self absorbed and is mostly interested in making a quick buck for himself to stay on top. He is unethical and involved in a few underhanded dealings that make him the perfect character to sell Kyle the gun. His only concern is that it doesn't come back to haunt him later and he claims to never have had anything to do with anything illegal.

Charlie:-Age: 40s- bus driver who provides a bit of comic relief as he/she is bored out of their mind with their current occupation. They just feel it's their job to get people from one place to another but they don't give any service and don't care. Charlie is also a stress smoker and keeps their real emotions bottled up inside.
